Mural – 3 Nijmegen war time heroines

This “Waalpainting” mural is a tribute to all Nijmegen women who played a role in the resistance in the city during the Second World War.

Henriëtte Witteveen-van Gaalen  – owner of hotel-restaurant De Bonte Os on the Molenstraat. On Queen Wilhelmina’s birthday she openly hung the Dutch flag outside.

Nel Peters – started as a courier for the illegal newspaper Je Maintiendrai and soon played a central role in the Nijmegen resistance.

Jo Heinsius – in the house above her pharmacy, Heinsius, who liked to wear hats and capes, hid 2 Jewish girls.
